Are you a complex organisation that finds it difficult to explain simply what you do?

I can help.

I’m a communications strategist, helping organisations to explain complex things simply, developing messages that people can understand and get behind. I’m passionate about working with leadership teams who need to engage, influence and build trust to succeed. Particularly for charities and purpose-led organisations. I advise, run workshops, copywrite, train, and remain guardian of straightforward language and your carefully considered tone of voice.

Areas of Expertise

  • Preparing to make some big changes? Maybe something has gone wrong, and you need to deal with the fallout. When you’re touching the lives and interests of many people, in many ways, communications are often nuanced and intricate.

I’ve provided communications counsel to boards facing what seems like intractable opposition and yet, through taking care of those relationships and communicating with clarity and understanding, resolution has been achieved. We’ll “work the problem”, as NASA would say. It’s not rocket science, it IS considered, empathetic and timely.

  • I’ll work with you to develop a communications strategy covering all aspects of how your organisation communicates, internally and externally. It sets the overall direction, defining what each of your audiences needs to understand about you, so that what you’re saying feels relevant to their interests. It ensures clarity, consistency, and alignment across leadership messaging, internal engagement, stakeholder relations, and brand positioning. With a comms strategy in place everyone can understand your mission, goals, and impact. Without it, messages get lost or misunderstood.

  • I like to think of myself as a message architect, developing strong, structured messaging for boards so that they can communicate with their colleagues and communities more effectively. I lead workshops, distil outputs, and copywrite. It’s a collaborative process with each client, resulting in simple sentences and phrases that everyone can use and get behind.

  • You probably instinctively know when a piece of writing from your organisation feels a bit off. Too jargony, maybe. Or rather officious, when approachability is one of your star qualities. A touch paternalistic, when your whole service-offering is founded on empowerment. Or too casual, when the situation merits formality.

I create Tone of Voice Guidelines for your teams to use as practical reference points for all types of written or spoken communication, across your audiences. It can be part of a re-brand project. Or it may simply be one of those things no one has ever got around to doing, until now.

When retained as your Voice Guardian, I’ll be on hand to proof and advise your team, a fresh pair of eyes, ensuring people hear the ‘real you’ that’s best suited to the occasion.

  • Some important projects lend themselves to a fresh, focused, expert copywriter. A distilled version of your five-year strategy to share with stakeholders, so that they feel informed and involved. An annual report that brings to life the impacts you’re making. Your social impact report, benchmarking progress towards sustainability goals. I turn dry data into a good read.

I also ghost write for executives. Working one-to-one, we build a trusted relationship in which I can capture your voice and understand the ‘leading thoughts’ you are keen to communicate – in blogs, articles, reports, talks or scripts that I write.

  • I provide training for leaders who want to communicate with greater confidence and clarity. You don’t need to be a marketer. I love delivering workshops with tips and techniques that everyone can put into practice.

If your organisation doesn’t have PR skills inhouse, I can deliver PR skills training to your marketing team. We’ll look at best practice, ethics, and how to create insight-led campaigns that will enhance your reputation, have measurable impacts, and really resonate with your communities.

  • Sarah is gold dust! Her strategic insight at board level helped shape high-stakes decisions, ensuring our communications aligned with our vision and goals. Sharp, strategic, and deeply intuitive, Sarah cuts through complexity and delivers real results.

  • Our five-year strategy was full of detail and rather ‘wordy’. Sarah beautifully distilled it. Every phrase carefully chosen to capture our voice and, what I really love, using language shared by our partners. Having a clear narrative has enabled me to equip the team with a clear understanding of our purpose, mission and strategy, without getting lost in too much detail. The narrative provided by Sarah has given us a solid foundation from which we’ve been able to grow a shared voice and understanding, making other explanations of our services and offer easier to articulate. She’s brilliant!

  • Sarah captured my voice with precision – an expert ghost writer, who managed to unlock the ideas and story in me, refining our messaging to be clear, compelling, and impactful. A joy to work with.

My Philosophy

I’m a wordsmith who believes that what, and how, we communicate makes people feel something. That ‘something’ may be positive, negative, or just ‘meh’. We may forget what’s been said within minutes. Or it may be ringing in our ears, keeping us up at night. It could be something that helps us to see things differently. Or shows that we have been listened to, after all.

Effective communication is about how people respond to what you’re saying. Do they ‘get it’? Does your message matter to the people who hear it? Whether it’s staff, stakeholders, or the wider community, the right message helps people connect, engage, and act. I help organisations to cut through the noise, turning complexity into clear, meaningful messages that resonate. Communication should never be an afterthought; it’s the thread that helps us make sense of the world.

Bio

With a 30-year PR career and client history that spans global commercial enterprises, small and mid-sized businesses, non-profits and the public sector, I have a bank of strategic and hands-on experience to draw upon.

I was a board director and co-owner of a small business – a successful PR agency – for 16 years. And since becoming a charity trustee in 2024, my appreciation and understanding of the particular challenges of nonprofits has rocketed.

I consider myself ‘sector-agnostic’, having worked with clients from professional services to trades and the built environment. Today, I’m drawn to organisations that care about social value. Those who act with intent, consideration and respect for people and nature.

Several years of leadership studies culminated in an MBA, a deeper understanding of what it takes to lead and grow an organisation, recognition that there’s more than one way to be a leader, and a realisation that if we can’t engage ‘followers’ are we even leading?

In 2025 I launched my own freelance business with a clear purpose. I help boards to engage, influence and build trust through excellent communications.
